The Executive Committee of the City CouncilThe Executive Committee and the mayor control the management of the City of Reykjavik and its financial management to the extent that such matters are not assigned to others. Generally speaking, it supervises the administration of the City, in particular its financial management, prepares the budget and ensures that the City of Reykjavik’s annual accounts are prepared according to the rules. The Executive Committee of the City Council is permitted to take final decisions that do not significantly affect the finances of the Reykjavik Municipal Treasury or its institutions, provided that there is not a dispute within the Executive Committee or with the Mayor about the decision.
The Executive Committee is composed of seven councillors elected by the City Council for a term of one year and the same number of substitutes. The mayor has a seat on the Executive Committee of the City Council. He has no voting rights unless specifically elected to the Committee. A political party that has a councillor on the City Council but not on the Executive Committee may nominate a councillor to attend the meetings of the Executive Committee with the rights to speak and to table a motion.
Regular meetings of the Executive Committee of the City Council are held at Reykjavik’s Town Hall on Thursdays at 9.30 am.
