After-School
After-School Centres (6-9 year old)
ÍTR after-school centres offer a range of leisure activities after the compulsory school day for 6 to 9-year-olds in Reykjavik. The after-school centres offer a diverse agenda which includes both organised and free play. The aim is to offer exciting subjects to fulfil the children’s need for play and creativity and each week is planed ahead. All six-year-old children are offered sports instruction free of charge if circumstances allow it. The schedule is one hour each time, twice a week, organised by each district’s sports club. Reykjavík Sports Federation is the supervisory body for the sports schools.
The after-school centres are open after school and stay open until 5:15 pm every day. On parents’ days, project days and during the Christmas and Easter holidays the after-school centres are open from 8 am except when otherwise stated. Registration for those days is especially requested. The after-school centres are closed during the compulsory schools’ winter holidays. A fixed fee is paid for the service. See the tariffs on the ÍTR website: www.itr.is
Applications are for each school year (August - June). If one wants to discontinue the service this must be done before the 15th of each month and it comes into effect on the first day of the following month. If the resignation comes after the 15th day of the month it doesn’t come into effect until the last day of the following month. The required forms must be completed; they can be found in each after-school centre.
Applications are to be made through Electronic Reykjavik. Electronic Reykjavik

After-school (13-16year old)centres fulfil the needs of 13 to 16-year-old children by providing constructive and worthwhile activities during their spare time. Emphasis is placed on diversifying the centres’ operations, as well as reaching youngsters who need social support. Various methods are utilised in order to achieve this, e.g. the facilitation of clubs and specialized group work, “access for all” activities, and temporary projects. Juvenile councils operate in all the after-school centres. These influence the centres’ programme planning and provide representation for the youngsters. Preventive measures, aimed at preventing smoking, drug use and bullying, are essential components of the centres’ operation. Reinforcing positive self-image and a healthy lifestyle is emphasized. Support is provided for activities, which are aimed at youngsters in grades 8-10 at compulsory school.
Entry to the after-school centres is free of charge when there is an open house. The cover for dances, concerts and such events is kept at minimum. Fund raising is usually organized, in cooperation with the youngsters, if travel expenses occur. Further information is available from the Sport and Leisure Division, Bæjarháls 1, 110 Reykjavík.
