Home-based day care
Home-based day care is run by independent carers who have received formal permission from the City Authorities. The Preschool Division of the City of Reykjavik issues the operating licences.
To get a day care place you need to contact the carer directly.
The service is for parents that have their children with carers who have permission to operate in Reykjavík, and parents who intend to use the day care service.
The carers provide the information about the fee and fee collection. The City of Reykjavik pays a certain amount for every child in day care. The subsidy for the day care fee depends on the parents’ marital and educational status.
Parents need to be legally resident in Reykjavik in order to get a subsidy from the City of Reykjavik for home-based day care. Parents also receive a subsidy for the day care fee if they have a child in a day care in another municipality than Reykjavik.
Comments or complaints about the day care service should be submitted to the day care counsellor at in each Community Service Centre.
In order for a complaint to be followed up it must be submitted in writing. You can get the necessary form from the Community Service Centres. The complainant can request anonymity as regards the carer, but must provide a name to the day care counsellor. If a written complaint is submitted because of the work of a carer, the carer is contacted and notified that a complaint has arrived. The main substance of the complaint is not told over the phone, instead two day care counsellors visit the carer where he/she gets a chance to object. What will be done depends on the complaint, see the regulations regarding home-based day care.
