Preschool work is governed by the 2008 Law on Preschool Institutions. The Law states that preschool is the first stage of the Icelandic educational system and is intended for all children of preschool age. It is the aim of the preschool to create a healthy and safe environment for children, providing them with good opportunities for emotional and physical development and a happy childhood. Preschools should lay the groundwork for developing children’s skills in the Icelandic language and introduce them to Icelandic society. Also, preschools are supposed to encourage and support parents in their efforts to maintain their child’s mother tongue and teach children to recognise their cultural backgrounds.
