SUMMER ACTIVITIES FOR IMMIGRANT CHILDREN, AGES 6–9 YEARS OLD
The Reykjavík Sports and Youth Council (ÍTR) offers summer activities for immigrant children. Three-week programs are free of charge for children who have lived in Iceland for less than two years and have legal residence in Reykjavík. The summer activity courses are intended for children at the ages of 6–9 years. Children attend these courses in their local neighbourhoods. These courses allow the children to learn Icelandic through work and play, strengthening social relations with their peers and learning more about Reykjavik and what it has to offer in terms of leisure activities.
The subjects are demanding and diverse, adjusted to the different maturity levels of the children. Activities on offer include swimming, field trips, games, sports, arts and crafts, and much more. The courses take place on weekdays from 09:00 to 16:00. Children may also attend between 08:00 and 09:00 and from 16:00 to 17:00, but this must be paid for separately.
HOW DO I REGISTER MY CHILD FOR SUMMER ACTIVITIES?
Electronic applications for ÍTR’s summer activities can be found at Electronic Reykjavík. Please note that registration for individual courses must be made before 12:00 Fridays if the child is to start the following Monday. Those parents who cannot register electronically can visit ÍTR’s leisure centres (preferably before noon) and the local service centre for assistance. Children cannot be registered for the summer courses over the telephone. However, service centres, leisure centres and the Reykjavík Municipal switchboard centre (tel. 411 1111) can give instructions via telephone if the legal guardian has accessed the electronic applications on the internet.
TERMS OF PAYMENT
There is a 20% discount for siblings taking part in ÍTR courses. Three weeks are free of charge: these periods may be chosen by the children’s legal guardians. Summer activities run from the beginning of June until school starts in August.
