The Iceland Airwaves music festival runs from Thursday, Nov. 5, through Saturday, Nov. 7. The festival is now an established highlight of the year in Reykjavík.

Airwaves at Reykjavík City Hall

For the first time, Iceland Airwaves will hold concerts in Tjarnarsalur at Reykjavík City Hall. The festival will officially open in Tjarnarsalur on Thursday, Nov. 5. Iceland Airwaves has long been an essential part of Reykjavík’s cultural life. The partnership between the City and the festival has strengthened Reykjavík’s standing as a music city, created valuable opportunities for Icelandic musicians, and brought the city center to life every fall.

“Festival concerts have not traditionally been held at City Hall, so I am delighted to offer it as a venue for the first time. Setup is underway here in Tjarnarsalur, the building is coming to life, and we are full of anticipation.” — Hildur Björnsdóttir, mayor

A mainstay of Reykjavík’s music scene

Iceland Airwaves debuted in 1999, with concerts in a hangar at Reykjavík Airport and elsewhere in the city. Since then, the festival has flourished, becoming one of Reykjavík’s permanent Partner Festivals and a cornerstone of the city’s music scene.

Part of what concertgoers love is being able to hop between venues, trying to see and hear as much as possible during the festival. The city center comes alive with music echoing everywhere from small record shops and art museums to trendy bars and historic churches to nightclubs and major concert venues.

In addition to the official program, “off-venue” events will not require a wristband. The annual Iceland Airwaves conference will also take place at the Parliament Hotel on Nov. 5 and 6, with experts from Iceland and abroad discussing a range of music industry topics.
