Parking garage subscription terms

Terms and conditions

Monthly permits in parking garages are solely for vehicles in general use, and registered vehicles have 24-hour access, however, it is only for one vehicle per subscriber at a time.

Storing cars, campers, trailers, or other vehicles is forbidden.

Cars without number plates, trailers, and other vehicles that are banned from use according to the Article 75 of the Traffic Act, No 77/2019 will be immediately removed from the garage at the owner's expense, subject to the right to object.

The Parking Fund will endeavor to ensure that there are always reserved spaces for holders of monthly parking permits. If there are no free spaces or if the permit holder cannot enter the building due to an equipment failure, it does not entitle the holder to park for free in a chargeable parking area in Reykjavík.

Violation of these terms will lead to immediate termination of the subscription. Reykjavík Parking Service assumes no responsibility for damage, burglary, or vandalism to vehicles in the parking garages. The parking garages are monitored by security cameras and police can request access to these records for case investigation.

Reykjavík Parking Service reserves the right to change the terms as necessary and will inform subscribers of all significant changes. The subscriber commits to abide by the terms in effect at any given time.

The Department of Environment and Planning uses the personal identifiable information submitted in connection with City parking garage monthly subscriptions, such as name, ID number, phone number, license plate number, and email, for the purpose of creating and fulfilling contracts with subscribers. Electronic surveillance in the parking garage is also conducted for security and property protection purposes. Images are generally stored for 30 days and deleted thereafter.

After the contract relationship has ended, data is stored for 30 years and after that period, transferred to the National Archives of Iceland according to Act No. 77/2014 on the Public Archives.

Terms updated March 7, 2023

Termination of subscription

If the payment slip has not been paid 5 days after the due date, access is blocked. If it still has not been paid 15 days after the final due date, it is considered that the subscription has been terminated and the parking spot will be offered to others.

You can terminate your subscription by email to bilahus@reykjavik.is. The termination takes effect as of the beginning of the next month or at the end of the period that has been paid for.

Further information

Holders of monthly parking permits have access to the parking garage 24 hours a day. Building access may vary by parking garage. A malfunction of parking garage equipment that does not allow the cardholder to enter does not entitle the cardholder to park for free in paid street parking.

Payers or subscribers can request the addition of license plate numbers to their subscription at any time. The maximum number of license plates per subscriber is 3. When the limit is reached, the license plate number to be blocked must be specified for another number to be added. Changes must be sent by email to bilahus@reykjavik.is well in advance. You cannot add a license plate number via phone or using the assistance button in a parking garage.

If the subscriber tries to exit with a license plate number that has not been reported, the subscriber must pay using the payment machine as a short-term user.

It is necessary for subscribers to notify when a vehicle is sold to avoid inconvenience should the new owner use the parking garage.

Waitlist for parking garage subscriptions

Subscription wait times vary widely across parking garages, depending on location, the number of available spaces, and the number of people on the waitlist. Unfortunately, it's not possible to predict when long-term spaces will become available, making it difficult to give precise wait times.

Parking garage guidelines

  • Drive into the parking garage
  • Complete your business
  • Before driving to the exit gate, pay at the payment machine or with the app.

Pay at the pay station

Enter your license plate number using the touch screen, press "start payment," select the image of your license plate and then pay. You can only pay with credit cards; cash and coins are not accepted.

If you've already paid but decided not to leave, you'll need to go back to the pay station and pay for the additional time.

When paying with the app, make sure you pay for the correct parking garage:

When using the app, timing doesn't matter — you can pay anytime between entering the parking garage and reaching the exit gate. Camera recognition at the exit gate will then check out your vehicle. If the service user can cancel payment in the app, they haven't selected to pay for the parking garage.

You can only pay with the apps advertised in the parking garages

If the gate doesn't open when entering:

The parking garage is full.

The barrier gate covers the license plate. Watch for vehicles behind you before moving your car—often, you only need to shift it 20–30 cm. Moving forward is often better than backing up, but if you're right at the gate and it won't open, the parking garage is probably full.

Keep in mind that the parking garage can be full even if you see empty spaces — those spots are reserved for subscribers.

Vehicles without license plates cannot use the parking garages because access is controlled by camera recognition. Driving without license plates is not permitted, and Reykjavík Parking Service staff can therefore not assist with registering vehicles that lack license plates.

If the payment machine screen isn't working:

This is usually because the screen is being pressed too hard; the touchscreen works like a phone touchscreen.

If payment in the app isn't working:

The camera may have misread your license plate when you entered (this mainly happens during snow or bad weather). Calling 4113403 to correct the registration should be enough, but if that doesn't work, you'll need to pay at the payment machine.

If the exit gate isn't working:

The most common reason is that payment hasn't been made for the parking space.

If you've selected to pay for the wrong license plate number, you need to pay for your own license plate and then request a refund for the incorrect payment at bilahus@reykjavik.is

In the app, you must select the correct parking garage — the exit gate won't open if you've paid for a different garage or for street parking.

If the parking garage is closed:

The parking garages are closed at night from midnight to 7 a.m., and there is no maintenance service during that time. After closing, short-term visitors can pay with EasyPark and receive a PIN number to enter in the access panel by the pedestrian doors.

But if the vehicle was misread by the camera recognition when entering, this won't work and you won't be able to access your vehicle until 7 a.m. the next morning.

This option is generally not recommended and is intended only for those who have accidentally locked their vehicles inside. Drivers are responsible for any costs if their vehicles get locked in the parking garages overnight.

Subscribers:

If more than one vehicle is registered on a subscription, only one vehicle can enter on the subscription at a time; the second vehicle will always be registered as a short-term visitor.

Long-term users can request a PIN number to enter the parking garage at night to retrieve their vehicles. Send an email to bilahus@reykjavik.is.
